The drive takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, all straightforward divided highway, past Puerto Morelos and Playa del Carmen before the signed turn-off to Akumal.
In peak season (December–January, Easter week, summer) the stretch between Playa del Carmen and Akumal can slow down in the afternoon. If you're landing late in the day, build in an extra 20–30 minutes so you're not watching the clock.

"Akumal" covers several distinct bays and communities strung along the coast, and where you're staying changes the drop-off.
Akumal Bay is the main beach, the one famous for snorkelling with sea turtles. Half Moon Bay is the quieter crescent just north, lined with condos and villas. Aventuras Akumal and South Akumal are gated residential stretches a little further along. Several of these are behind security gates with their own access roads.
Give your driver the exact property name and address when you book, not just "Akumal." A local driver knows the gates and will take you to the right entrance, which beats wandering a residential road with your bags after a long flight.
Akumal's bays and gated communities look similar from the highway. Include your condo, villa or hotel name and address, and any gate or community name from your reservation. It makes the hand-off at the end of the drive quick and painless.
Akumal has no airport bus and no taxi rank waiting for arrivals. The budget alternative is a bus or colectivo to Playa del Carmen, then a second colectivo that drops you on the highway at the Akumal junction, leaving you a walk or a short local taxi from the beach and the condos. With luggage, snorkel gear or kids, that's a lot of moving parts.

Akumal Bay is one of the best places in the Riviera Maya to snorkel with green sea turtles. Access to the turtle area is regulated, there are seasonal rules, guides and a small fee at the beach, so check the latest on arrival. None of that affects your transfer; your driver simply gets you to the bay.
