45–60 minutes south down the 307. Driver at arrivals, price confirmed, nothing to figure out when you land.
Check prices & book →Playa del Carmen sits about 65 km south of Cancún airport, along the Riviera Maya. It's one of the most popular destinations in the region, good reason for that. The famous 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) runs parallel to the beach and is lined with restaurants, bars, shops, and the kind of easy street life that keeps people coming back.
The drive is straightforward: south down Federal Highway 307 through the Riviera Maya. On a clear day you're there in 45 minutes. In peak season, with construction or a slow truck on the 307, add 15 minutes. It's rarely a painful drive.
Distance: ~65 km | Journey time: 45–60 min | Private from: $72 total | Airport: Cancún International (CUN)
For the Playa del Carmen route, this question actually matters. Shared shuttles exist and cost $15–25 per person. If you're travelling solo on a tight budget, that can make sense.
If there are two or more of you, a private transfer usually works out cheaper per person than the shuttle, and it goes straight to your hotel instead of dropping other passengers first. A shared shuttle to Playa del Carmen can take 90 minutes or more if you're not the first stop.
For a group of three or four, the maths are simple: split a $72–80 private vehicle and everyone pays less than a shared shuttle, arrives sooner, and doesn't stand around the arrivals hall waiting for a bus to fill.
1–3 passengers. Good for couples or solo travellers with standard bags.
1–4 passengers. More space for luggage, ideal if you're travelling with more than a carry-on each.
5–8 passengers. The go-to for groups. Far better value than splitting across two taxis.
Premium vehicles for those starting the trip in style. Available on both platforms.
Your driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall of your terminal, Terminal 2 or Terminal 3, depending on your flight. They'll have your name on a sign.
After customs, the arrivals hall will be loud and busy. People will approach you offering transfers, taxis, hotel shuttles. The safest thing to do is walk through and look for your name. Your pre-booked driver doesn't need to approach you, they'll be standing, sign up, in the meeting area.
If there's any confusion, use the phone number in your booking confirmation. Every platform provides one. Don't engage with anyone who approaches you offering a "better deal."
Most international flights from Europe and Canada arrive into Terminal 3. US flights typically arrive into Terminal 2. Double-check when you book, it makes a difference to where your driver waits.
Playa has changed a lot in the last decade. It used to be a backpacker town; now it's a mix of boutique hotels, proper restaurants, beach clubs, and a nightlife strip that gets genuinely busy in season. 5th Avenue is pedestrianised for most of its length, which makes the centre easy to explore on foot.
Most visitors stay either in the centre (walkable to everything) or slightly south in Playacar, which is quieter and more residential. Your driver will know both areas. Just confirm your hotel name at the time of booking.
