Check prices & book →Tulum is about 130 km south of Cancún airport, making it one of the longer Riviera Maya runs. The road is straightforward, south on Federal Highway 307, past Puerto Morelos, past Playa del Carmen, past Akumal, then down into Tulum town or out to the beach zone.
On a clear day, budget 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours for the drive. In peak season (December–January, Easter week, summer) traffic between Playa del Carmen and Akumal can add meaningful time, especially if you're arriving in the afternoon. If you have a late afternoon flight, it's worth accounting for an extra 30 minutes just in case.

Tulum has two very different areas, and where you're staying changes everything about your transfer.
Tulum town (also called Tulum Pueblo) is the inland area along the main road, the ADO bus stops here, there are supermarkets, cheaper restaurants, and most of the town's residential streets. It's practical and increasingly well developed.
Tulum beach zone (Zona Hotelera) is the strip of boutique eco-hotels running south along the Caribbean coast, from the Tulum ruins down past the national park entrance. Many of the hotels here are accessed via a single road, Boca Paila, and some are several kilometres from the main highway. Make sure you give your driver the full address or GPS coordinates of your hotel, not just "Tulum beach."
Some beach zone hotels have genuinely difficult access, sandy tracks, no lighting at night, narrow entrances. A private transfer driver familiar with the area handles this routinely. A taxi or rental car with no local knowledge can turn into a stressful hour of wrong turns after a long flight.
Tulum beach zone stretches for over 10 km. "Near the ruins" or "on the beach road" isn't enough. Include the hotel name and, if possible, the GPS coordinates from your booking confirmation. Your driver will thank you, and so will your stress levels.
Shared shuttles to Tulum exist, typically $30–40 per person. They make multiple stops in Playa del Carmen, often wait for the bus to fill, and drop passengers in a rough order that may or may not be convenient for your hotel's location on the beach road.
On a 2-hour journey, adding 45–60 minutes of stops and detours is a real cost. For two or more travellers, a private transfer works out cheaper per person than a shared shuttle and gets you to your specific hotel directly. The longer the journey, the more the time saving matters.
There's also a practical safety consideration: Tulum beach road after dark has no lighting in stretches, and orienting yourself at a new hotel at midnight after a long flight is much easier when a local driver gets you to the exact entrance.
1–3 passengers, standard luggage. Fine for the journey; slightly tight for 2 hours with big bags.
1–4 passengers. Recommended for comfort on a 2-hour run, more legroom, more boot space.
5–8 passengers. The most comfortable option for groups, and much better value than two separate vehicles.
Premium vehicle for a longer journey, arriving at a Tulum eco-hotel in a nice car feels right.
Your driver will be in the arrivals hall of your terminal, Terminal 2 (most US flights) or Terminal 3 (most international flights from Europe and Canada). They'll have a sign with your name.
The arrivals hall is busy. Walk through and look for your name in the designated meeting area, don't engage with anyone approaching you. If you can't find your driver, call the number on your booking confirmation before doing anything else.
