The road runs south on Federal Highway 307 through Tulum, then on through Felipe Carrillo Puerto before reaching the lagoon. Much of the southern half is a single carriageway through quiet countryside, so it's a calmer drive than the busy Cancún–Tulum corridor, just a long one.
This is one of the longest transfers from Cancún airport, so the arrival time matters. A morning or early-afternoon landing means you reach Bacalar in daylight; a late flight means a long evening drive. Plan around it.

Bacalar's Laguna de los Siete Colores, the Lagoon of Seven Colors, is the reason people make the trip: a vast freshwater lagoon banded in turquoise and deep blue, with cenotes, stromatolites and a quiet Pueblo Mágico beside it. It's slower and far less developed than the coast, which is exactly the appeal.
For a destination this far south, weigh up the options honestly. A private door-to-door transfer is the most comfortable, you arrive rested at your hotel with no changes. But it's also the priciest single leg, so it's worth knowing the alternatives before you book.
Private transfer: simplest, door to door, ~4 hours. ADO bus: a direct service runs from the airport, cheap, but 5–6 hours with stops. Fly to Chetumal (CTM): a short domestic hop, then a ~40-minute transfer into Bacalar, good if you'd rather not drive. The Maya Train now reaches Bacalar too, which some travellers use for part of the journey. For arriving rested at your door, the private transfer is the least hassle.
Some travellers split the trip rather than do four hours in one go, a night in Tulum on the way down, then a shorter run to Bacalar the next day. If that suits your plans, you can simply book two separate transfers. For most people on a fixed itinerary, though, the direct drive is the practical choice: settle in, watch the Yucatán roll by, and arrive at the lagoon ready to relax.

Your driver waits in the arrivals hall of your terminal, Terminal 2 (most US flights) or Terminal 3 (most flights from Europe and Canada), holding a sign with your name. Walk through arrivals and find it in the designated meeting area; don't engage with anyone offering rides as you exit. On a long route like this, it's worth a quick stop for water and a restroom before you set off, your driver will expect it.
